Project: PEGASUS (unpublished original art)
Artist: Fred Hembeck
So, I saw the Fred Hembeck Mantis/Swordsman piece on eBay, fell in art-love, picked it up, and soon found myself surfing over to Mr. Hembeck's website. One of the things which caught my eye there was his set of "Across the Page" drawings, and my head began spinning with possibilities. This was late July, 2009, and Marvel had just released Essential Marvel Two-in-One #3, as well as announcing for several months down the line a Project: PEGASUS hardback (both of which I'd had the privilege of mapping for Marvel a year or so earlier). With those fresh in mind, I tentatively dropped Mr. Hembeck a line, asking about the possibility of a PEGASUS "Across the Page" commission. Happily, he remembered the books fondly and was happy to do the piece for a grand total of, including shipping, $120. Yes, $120. I asked for seven characters (The Thing, Quasar, Giant-Man, Deathlok, Thundra, Aquarian, Screaming Mimi), and not only did he give me the seven, he threw in Nuklo, Solarr, and Klaw of his own accord.
Particular elements I love here - Solarr's sneering evil eyes, the goofy glowing Nuklo, the va-va-voom Thundra, Giant-Man's short pants (and his very noble/heroic pose), and the very self-contained Ben in the middle of all the chaos. I'm not sure what more I could ask for - an all around excellent page. Consider this an all-out recommendation that you should run by his site, flag him down, and commission something from him ASAP!
